How Cornell and Harvard Shaped CEO Michael Polk’s Career Path

Few executives can point to a clear, deliberate line from the classroom to the corner office. Michael Polk is an exception. His education at Cornell University and Harvard Business School did not just open doors it provided the analytical and managerial foundations on which an entire career in consumer-packaged goods was built.

Polk enrolled at Cornell as an engineering student, following his father’s footsteps. His area of focus, Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, earned playful skepticism from peers in more traditional engineering fields who called it “imaginary engineering.” But the program’s emphasis on mathematical modeling, manufacturing optimization, and systems thinking proved prescient. When Polk graduated in 1982 and joined Procter & Gamble, he was equipped with exactly the kind of thinking that a large manufacturing operation needed.

His time in P&G’s paper products division, working a seven-day rotating shift at a mill in Pennsylvania, showed him the practical side of business in a way no classroom could replicate. Michael Polk supervised production on one of seven papermaking machines and learned, as he later described, how dependent a career can be on the support and contributions of others.

The Harvard Accelerant

Sensing that the technical path at P&G might limit his longer-term potential, Polk enrolled at Harvard Business School. The MBA, he has said, accelerated his transition into marketing and general management. Following Harvard, he spent years at Kraft Foods leading the Post Cereals Division, the Asia Pacific region, and the integration of Nabisco after its acquisition. Unilever recruited him in 2003 to lead its U.S. Foods business, and he was later promoted to president of the Americas and then to a global leadership role overseeing food, home, and personal care categories.
