Why Justin Nelson of JP Morgan Values Psychology Graduates
Ask most people which degree leads to a career in private banking, and they will name economics or finance. Justin Nelson, who has spent nearly three decades in wealth management and now serves as a Managing Director at JP Morgan, points to a different subject. Many of the most capable candidates he interviews studied psychology.
Nelson heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut. His 20-person group handles more than $15 billion in client assets, and he has seen firsthand which skills hold up under pressure.
A Job Split Down the Middle
Speaking with Money Inc, Justin Nelson JP Morgan described the work as roughly half finance and results. The remainder, he said, is “psychology and how to positively interact with people.” That balance shapes how he evaluates applicants. Someone who grasps why a client hesitates, overreacts, or avoids a hard decision brings something a spreadsheet cannot supply.
High-net-worth families seldom bring purely numerical problems. A conversation about portfolio allocation can quickly turn into one about generational wealth transfer, inheritance planning, or relationships among relatives. Advisors need patience and sensitivity to steer those discussions.
Teaching the Teachable
Justin Nelson draws a clear line between what training can and cannot provide. Technical skills such as analyzing balance sheets can be learned on the job. Emotional intelligence is far harder to instill after the fact, so he prefers to hire people who already have it.
His preference extends to other unconventional majors, including biology and engineering. Nelson himself studied chemistry and economics at Tufts University and later earned an MBA from Columbia University, a mix that taught him to combine ideas from separate disciplines.
For aspiring advisors, the message from this JP Morgan leader is encouraging. A background in human behavior can be a real asset in a field often assumed to reward math above all else, and Justin Nelson has built a JP Morgan team that proves the point. See related link for additional information.
