Ella Robertson’s Call to Action: From Slacktivism to Tangible Impact

In an age where digital activism is more prevalent than ever, Ella Robertson, Managing Director
of One Young World, is urging a shift from online gestures to real-world
actions. Ella Robertson’s insights highlight the growing concern over
“slacktivism,” a term describing superficial online support for
causes that often fails to translate into meaningful change.

Ella Robertson argues that while social media can amplify voices and raise awareness, it often
lulls people into a false sense of accomplishment. “When you share a post
on Instagram, you get a dopamine hit from the likes and comments. But, in
reality, all you’ve done is put pixels out into the ether,” she explains.
Robertson’s critique is aimed at encouraging activists to bridge the gap
between online support and real-life impact.

One Young World, an organization dedicated to empowering young leaders, has been at the forefront
of this advocacy. Under Ella Robertson’s leadership, One Young World has been
striving to motivate its community to engage in tangible actions that drive
long-lasting change. Robertson emphasizes the importance of connecting with
those who may hold differing viewpoints, urging activists to reach out to
individuals outside their immediate circles. “You need to be reaching out
to people who aren’t like you. Even if we disagree on many things, there will
be areas where we agree we need to make progress,” she states.

Ella Robertson also cautions against counterproductive forms of activism that alienate
potential allies. She references disruptive actions, such as the recent
environmental protests involving the defacing of valuable art, as examples of
tactics that may further polarize public opinion. “Movements need to be
much more judicious about when they’re picking disruption,” she advises.

Through her work with One Young World, Ella Robertson continues to champion the need for a
balanced approach to activism—one that combines the reach of digital platforms
with the irreplaceable power of on-the-ground efforts. As the dialogue around
effective activism evolves, her perspective offers a critical reminder: true
change requires moving beyond the screen. See related link for additional information.
